Attending remotely the workshop on Metrics and Social Web Services: Quantitative Evidence for their Use and Impact

Yesterday I attended remotely the (free for remote viewers) workshop entitled Metrics and Social Web Services: Quantitative Evidence for their Use and Impact organized by Brian kelly (2briankelly) and held at the Open University:

This one day workshop will explore ways in which metrics related to the use of Social Web services can be used in order to provide evidence of how the services are being used; allow comparisons to be made with one’s peers and enable trends in usage to be identified.

The workshop will cover both individual and institutional use of Social Web services to support a variety of professional activities in higher educational institutions ranging from use of Social Web services by researchers and institutional use to support marketing activities.

With @mferres and for a short time @silviarimonr, we have watched live almost all sessions thorugh the streaming service. The video was OK and the sound was great, so we had no difficulties understanding the talks, even though the English accents is somewhat more difficult for us to follow than an American accent.

Unfortunately the slides projected at locally at the workshop were difficult to follow, especially during the first part of the meeting. This notwithstanding, most of them were already available at the workshop website.

This was a very interesting meeting that I wish I could have attended personally. Following remotey (froms one’s office) means distractions, interruptions and nuisance for other people in the room. However, as inearlier experiences of this kind, I found the ourcome of the remote viewing quite positive.

Actually, the topic of this workshop is very timely – how to actually measure impact, how to establish metrics. Information provided by lecturers was highly interesting and captivating, while allowing us to look for a deeper insight in the subject. As usual, British universities are ahead of us; however, we must benefit from this and learn from them.

We did not only follow remotely, but did ask questions – and were answered. It is really funny that sometimes Brian mentioned that people from the Universtiy of Girona were watching and tweeting. Despite the advances in communications, it is still a wonder that we can communicate so fast, in real time.

I am very thankful to Brian Kelly for bringing attention to me about this meeting. What we learnt will be quite useful both for our duties as Social Media Strategists at the University of Girona, and also at the Reserach Group level.

Avui ha començat a les instal.lacions del Parc Científic i Tecnològic de la UdG la segona edició del Curs d’Estiu “Ciència, Recerca i Educació 2.0″, organitzat per la Càtedra de Cultura Científica i Comunícació Digital de la UdG (C4D).

En aquesta segona edició hi ha una quinzena d’estudiants apuntats. A part d’assistir a les classes (Miquel Duran @miquelduran, Mireia Güell @mireiaguell i Meius Ferrès @mferres), han pogut fer una mica de networking durant el coffee-break al Cafè del Parc.

Jo mateix he fet la introducció al Curs d’Estiu, que és coordinat per la directora de la C4D, Sílvia Simon (@silviasimonr). En aquesta segona edició, sense canviar els continguts, hem hagut de restructurar el col.lectiu de professors, de tal forma que la docència s’assumeix des del conjunt de professors-investigadors de la c4d i de l’iqc, amb la col.laboració inestimable de la Meius Ferrès, Social Media Manager de la UdG, en Dídac López (@dlopezv), director dels Serveis Informàtics de la UdG, i l’Íngrid Aznar (@ingridaznar), cap de la Unitat de Comunicació i Divulgació de la Recerca de la UdG. Aquests tres professionals complementen les aportacions dels professors-investigadors i proporcionen perspectives diferents a les més acadèmiques.

A twitter, totes les piulades es fan amb el hashtag #cecre20, i hi ha un compte-relator que és @cecre20.

A la sessió d’avui, he començat jo mateix (@miquelduran) fent la introducció del curs, presentant el seu objectiu i aportant la visió d’un membre del personal acadèmic. Una mica aprofitant la meva presentació de la setmana passada al curs d’estiu Pla Digital a Palafrugell, he deixat clar que format part del món de la Web 2.0 no és pas una qüestió de comoditat tecnològica, sinó sobretot tot una actitud d’adaptació al canvi, i d’una voluntat de compartir, de col.laborar i de cooperar.

Després, la Mireia Güell (@mireiaguell), membre de la C4D, ha presentat un recull de recursos educatius a la xarxa que estan disponbiles per a l’educació no universitària, encara que també es poden fer servir a qualsevol nivell educatiu i en qualsevol tasca que impliqui utilitzar les eines de la Web 2.0.

Durant el coffee-break hem aprofitat per donar instruccions a tothom sobre la marxa del curs d’estiu, i sobretot hem intentat inculcar-hi la cultura de fer servir les eines que anem trobat de la forma més intel.ligent i senzilla possible.

Finalment, en la darrera part de la tarda la Meius Ferrès (@mferres), Social Media Manager de la UdG, ha fet un taller pràctic d’eines de la Web 2.0, amb especial referència a twitter i xarxes socials. El curs ha acabat mitja hora més tard del previst. Tenint en compte que durant el coffee-break de fet hi ha “hagut classe” amb networking, ha estat una tarda ben productiva, llarga i intensa.

A partir de demà els partiicpants al curs treballaran amb una xarxa social privada sobre la plataforma NING, que l’any passat, en la primera edició, va donar bons resultats.

Dijous a la tarda a les 7 els participants assisitiran a la cloenda del 4rt Jove Campus de Recerca de la UdG, que tindrà lloc al propi Parc, per dur a terme una sessió de posada en pràctica del que hagin après durant el curs. Com que el curs és semipresencial, demà dimecres i divendres les sesions seran a distància.

Tal com s’ha deixat clar durant el coffee-break-networking, la voluntat és que el curs no s’acabi pas divendres, sinó que continuï més enllà, tot manenint el contacte entre tots els participants, i fent una trobada presencial passat l’estiu. Una mica, es tracta de creat una comunitat de hashtag.
